Artist Statement:

Even at an early age Rich enjoyed working with his hands and being creative. Working with wood is challenging and rewarding for him, because it is his passion.

Rich’s first career was in animal husbandry and he managed multiple pure-breed diary operations. After the realization that the amount of work did not equal the rewards he decided to get a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Information Systems from the University of Wisconsin and try the corporate world. Although these challenges exercised his mind, Rich missed working with his hands.

A woodworking hobby grew into his passion, which in turn became his profession. Rich has supplemented his self-taught skills and artistic eye with professional training to speed up the learning and proficiency curves.

Rich’s style incorporates clean lines that produce exceptional pieces of furniture. These pieces are functional, and can be considered art. He emphasizes and incorporates flowing lines that are attractive, elegant, and depictive of nature. His style is based on traditional design with influence from Asian and Shaker design.

Rich also incorporates decorative details such as inlays and uses highly figured woods. Highly figured woods have organic characteristics and what he calls the wow or knockout factor. Rich puts a great deal of care and attention into each piece and truly feels that these finished pieces are part of him because of it. It is Rich’s desire to share his work with you and that his work takes on a life of its own.

His philosophy is basic: smile and enjoy whatever you do with a passion and remember that your world is what you make of it

> Hi everyone – if you were at our breakfast this past November – you

> heard my friend tell her story of a life of domestic violence and how she is now on her own with her daughter but was left with physical challenges.

Those physical challenges are taking a toll on her and her doctors have told her that within a short time she will no longer be able to> drive……….and probably within a year she will not be able to walk……..

> Some items that will help her in her home once this occurs:

washer and dryer and small chest freezer.

> She is trying to have these kinds of things in place in the next couple of weeks.

Does anyone have any of these items that are sitting at your home and not being used much?

It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that design became a vocation in and of itself, and ornately carved furniture and architectural details became available to the middle class. In this presentation, Mr. Vrba will give a brief history of artistic expression from the Paleolithic Period through modern times and how it connects to the art of woodcarving.

Tomas Vrba is an award-winning wood sculptor and art restorer. He has worked as a furniture restorer and taught woodcarving classes in Seattle and Snohomish. He received his MFA in Fine Art Restoring in his native country of Slovakia and worked for several years as a restorer in Vienna before he moved to the Seattle area where he turned his focus to wood sculpture and carving.
