Topic is:  SOMETHING FROM NOTHING-ALMOST NOTHING.

If you have an odd scrap of wood that has some interesting character that you do not know what to do with, but cannot bring yourself to throw in the burn pile, bring it and we’ll vote on the most interesting scrap. Maybe I can find a prize for the winning scrap.

Election of officers is coming up fast. June is our month for Nominations and voting, so roll up yer sleeves and seek out some new blood to pick on the old officers and committee  chairs.   We do need a new membership chair and audio visual chair as well as Treasurer and Secretary. We have proposed nominations for officers, but opponents are always appreciated.

If we do not have someone to take over membership then we will have to address that in the most democratic way we know how-appointment by officers executive committee. Not just a democrat, but a republican or libertarian or tea partier can be selected.  So hold onto yer seats.

Remember to visit our generous sponsor retailers as it is the best way for us to show we appreciate them. Crosscut, Eastside Saw, Edensaw, Superior saw, Equipment sales and Service, Rockler and Woodcraft.

Looking ahead we have the June Workshop at Woodcraft on  JUNE 24th-you can still sign up for the frame making group.

August will be symposiums and Swap meet.

Service projects will need some volunteers to help out, sign up at the meeting. Help out the YWCA, downtown Tacoma Women’s shelter and the Compass Center Housing for Veterans in Renton, and possibly some craft kits needed for a children’s camp as the previous gentleman has died and left the group without a resource.  These are both really worthwhile groups that could benefit from our generous skills and a few supplies. No personal expense required-donations always helpful. Both groups can always make use of dressers any size anytime. Donation receipt available.

Soon elections are going to appear on the horizon so be prepared to shrink into your chairs so you will not be called on. If you like and support our organization, on the hand, you can proudly step up and say so by taking up where many other generous and capable members have been before.

We need your efforts and promise not to work you too hard.

Rockler is scheduled to host Clubs and Guilds on April 21st, please check your  calendar ahead of time.  Volunteer for a mere 2 hours and do some shopping as well. Doing a demo would also be great fun.

Marquetry focus

Japanese art and Ikebana for the last few years.  This art style is highly stylized, formalized, colors never run together and I have had some success.

Besides I like to twist oil painter’s noses, who says it is not an art.  But on the Continent Marquetry can only compete in the oil category.

Discuss and demonstrate the many ways of doing Marquetry.

• Start with picture select for beginners to using photographs
• Veneer selection
• Preparing the veneers for cutting
• Picture layout – the different ways it can be done.
• Actual cutting of the veneers using knifes and a free handed fret saw
• Pad method, when best to use
• Window method
• When to use either or both, or a third way
• Cut some book markers
• Time allows; cut a butterfly
• Gluing and finishing pictures
• How to glue up large sheets; not my specialty
• How to inlay small boxes, etc
