It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that design became a vocation in and of itself, and ornately carved furniture and architectural details became available to the middle class. In this presentation, Mr. Vrba will give a brief history of artistic expression from the Paleolithic Period through modern times and how it connects to the art of woodcarving.

Tomas Vrba is an award-winning wood sculptor and art restorer. He has worked as a furniture restorer and taught woodcarving classes in Seattle and Snohomish. He received his MFA in Fine Art Restoring in his native country of Slovakia and worked for several years as a restorer in Vienna before he moved to the Seattle area where he turned his focus to wood sculpture and carving.

Thanks,

Tomas

Dalton Ghetti has been carving teeny, tiny pencil tip sculptures for 25 years.

The New York Times reports,

“Mr. Ghetti, who owns about as many possessions as a monk, is aware how unusual his craft is. He started carving tree bark when he was a child and experimented with everything from soap to chalk before settling on graphite. It’s second nature now, and for 90 percent of his work, all he needs is a sewing needle, a razor blade and a carpenter’s or No. 2 pencil.

‘The pencil tip is great; it’s like a pure, very homogenous material,’ he said. ‘It cuts in the same direction, not like wood, which has a grain. But when I tell people how long it takes, that’s when they don’t believe it. That’s what amazes people more, the patience. Because everything nowadays has to be fast, fast, fast.’”

Insane. Serious patience. Impeccable eye-sight. Incredible motor skills. Apparently Ghetti takes “years and years” to finish each project. Check it out.

Now is the time to reserve your cabin and workshop space for the THIRD CARVING MAGAZINE Cruise. In the fall of 2007, 22 carvers went with 4 instructors to the Caribbean on Holland America Line. Then in fall 2008, the group was a little smaller but many repeated the experience with Donna Menke, author of the Ultimate Band Saw Boxes book and Mark Whillock, a relief carvers following in his Dad, Ivan Whillock’s footsteps. For the third cruise in January 2010, Donna Menke and Pam Gresham will instruct. The Holland America cruise from San Diego to the ports of Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas on the Mexican Riveria will be an enjoyable warm vacation during the winter months. The ship has 3 days at sea when workshops are scheduled for the carvers. In addition, the classroom will be available for free carve time. Kathleen Tansey, CTC, MCC (Certified Travel Counselor & Mastor Cruise Counselor), your agent onboard has arranged several special social events onboard for both the carvers and noncarving companions. For details about the cruise, please contact Kathleen at www.PricelessSunsetJourneys.com or 253-630-7755 or Kathleen@travelcenter4u.com.

Pam Gresham will teach lettering & patterns for chipcarving onboard. She has been carving for over 25 years. She is known for her large pieces including: fireplace mantels, shelves, cabinets, mirrors, tables and decorative boxes. Pam coordinates over 1200 demonstrations a year by guest carvers at Branson Silver Dollar City You may contact her at pam.gresham@yahoo.com.
Stowaway Rosita Mouse & More with Donna Menke
Donna Menke returns to teach Rosita mouse. She has her art degrees from the University of Texas, Austin and has taught wood carving since 1996. Rosita is cute, and not too difficult to carve. You can make this mouse with just a couple of palm gouges and a knife. During the cruise Donna will guide your carving, burning, & painting of the life-sized mouse shelf-sitter.
Visit Donna’s website: www.woodworks-by-donna.comto see sample of her work.
